This Spinnytail occupies rocky biotopes such as screes, but also sandy plains. The climate in its range is essentially hot desert with possible night frosts. As an adult, it can measure over 40 cm. Males are generally black with five to seven transverse stripes of white, yellow or red on their backs. Females are more variable. It has a thick, stocky tail covered in sharp scales, which it uses both as a defensive weapon (the origin of its name) and as a fat reserve.

Uromastyx dispar flavifasciata is a burrowing species whose burrows can be up to two metres long and one metre deep. These burrows provide shelter from predators and extreme heat. A herbivorous lizard, it feeds on leaves, seeds, fruit and flowers, and may also eat a few insects. It has a lifespan of around twenty years.
