The Avocet is found in coastal marshes, ponds and less saline estuaries. It feeds on aquatic insects, worms and small crustaceans. It captures them with its curved beak, which it swishes across the surface of the water.
It builds its nest in tall grass. The female lays 3 to 4 eggs.
The species is threatened by habitat destruction and poaching.
