• Origin: Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea
  • Class: Birds
  • Order: Columbiformes
  • Family: Columbidés

The island Imperial-pigeon loves the canopy and lives alone or in small groups high up in dense forests, coming ashore mainly to quench its thirst. Its flight is powerful and fast. A frugivore, it gathers fruit, berries and buds directly from branches close to the treetops.

Like all pigeons, it is a nest feeder, meaning that the young are born naked and blind, unable to survive without their parents. Its nest, a bulky platform, is often located high up at the end of branches. Unlike most other pigeons, the female generally lays only one egg. They live up to fifteen years.
