The green basil lives in the tropical rainforest on the banks of rivers. It stands on branches above the water and dives when disturbed.

Its food consists of insects, mice, small lizards and plants.

The female lays between 8 and 18 eggs several times a year, which she buries in the ground. The incubation period is around 80 days.
