This diurnal dendrobate is found in damp plains and at the foot of mountains. It is a terrestrial and arboreal frog; depending on its geographical origin, it has a wide variety of morphs. The aposematic colours of dendrobates may serve to warn predators of their toxicity.
The species is polygamous, although females try to keep the male who cares for their offspring. In captivity, sexual maturity is reached between 6 and 15 months, and the life expectancy is around 5 years.
