The frilled dragon is an agama found in the warm regions of southern Papua New Guinea, northern and eastern Australia. It lives mainly in trees in wooded savannahs and tropical forests.

Its defensive behaviour is remarkable: its outstretched ruff, open mouth and noisy whistles deter intruders. It also has powerful hind legs that enable it to stand upright and run a short distance.

It feeds on insects and small rodents.
