This small wader is a very noisy neighbour, living in pairs, families or groups of several dozen individuals. It inhabits wetlands and, during the breeding season, nests in pastures, alluvial plains close to watercourses and open marshy areas with short, interspersed vegetation. Courtship displays are observed, especially acrobatic flight with slow flapping. The male and female are identical.

It feeds on insects, earthworms and other invertebrates, and also captures small fish and larvae found in shallow water by vibrating its feet to draw its prey out of the sandy soil.

IUCN status: Least concern (appendix III)
