Like all turacos, the violet turaco lives in gallery forests and on forest edges. It can also be found in wooded areas bordering watercourses running through arid or semi-arid savannahs, at sea level and at high altitudes (up to around 1,000 m).

During its courtship displays, the touraco spreads its wings to show off its beautiful red feathers (the primary remiges). The female lays 2 white eggs in a nest built in high trees. The two parents take turns incubating the eggs for 21 to 23 days. The chicks are nidicoles and stay in the nest for 26 to 28 days. The touraco is a frugivore, feeding mainly on fruit, but also on flowers, buds and leaves, and sometimes a small insect.
