- Origin: South America
- Class: Birds
- Order: Asériformes
- Family: Anatidés
This teal is mainly found in Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina. It is one of the smallest and prettiest ducks, retaining the same colourful plumage throughout the year. Its sexual diphormism is very marked by its feathers: the female is brown, the male very colourful. Anatidae are closely tied to water, mainly freshwater. Their short legs are webbed, an adaptation to swimming.
Unlike most other duck species, they like to perch in trees and nest high up in tree holes. Only the female broods; the male is responsible for guarding the nest.
IUCN status: Least Concern (Annex III)
