The red-crested Turaco is endemic to northern and central Angola. Like all turacos, it is gregarious and territorial. Medium-sized, it usually has a colourful crest, a long tail and a stocky body. It can live for around twenty-five years or even longer in captivity.

The turaco is an arboreal bird, coming to the ground mainly to bathe and quench its thirst. Its flight is clumsy, and it is more at ease hopping on branches. It mainly flies from tree to tree and is not a migratory bird. The Musophagidae family is not sexually dymorphic and currently comprises twenty-three distinct species.
