Also known as the purple jackdaw, this sedentary species lives in groups and roams the African savannahs between Senegal, Nigeria, Cameroon and Kenya. It is a gregarious bird, very active and noisy, finding its food on the ground and in trees. It has a mixed diet: frugivorous, granivorous and insectivorous.

There is no sexual dimorphism in this species, which generally lays 2 to 3 pale blue eggs speckled with russet. The female nests in natural tree cavities and incubates alone, but both parents feed the chicks, which do their first flight at around 4 weeks of age. They live between 15 and 20 years.

IUCN status: Least concern (appendix III)
