Found in rivers and lakes, this turtle has a powerful jaw, a rough, solid shell and a broad, massive head that gives it a ferocious appearance. It can grow to 30 cm. Its diet is omnivorous, although mainly herbivorous.
Like all aquatic turtles, this species mates in the water and the female lays her eggs on land, depositing them in a carefully dug cavity in the ground. The egg-laying process lasts several hours, after which the turtle fills in the hole with its hind legs, so that the nest is undetectable to predators.
