The green touraco is native to West and Equatorial Africa. Its range extends along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean from Senegambia to northern Angola. Its magnificent green colour is due to a pigment called “touracoverdine”, which it finds in its diet of fruit, buds and flowers.
During courtship, green touracos spread their wings to show off the beautiful red spots on their primaries. The female lays 2 white eggs in a nest built from twigs. The two parents take it in turns to nurse the chicks for 21 to 23 days. The chicks are nestlings and stay in the nest for 26 to 28 days.
