This toad lives in deserts and semi-arid areas. Despite this habitat, it cannot do without water. To find moisture, it readily takes refuge in the abandoned burrows of rodents. It can reach an impressive size of 16 cm.

It is carnivorous and feeds on any prey of the right size: insects, snails, small rodents, other species of toad; it has a sticky tongue that helps it to capture its prey.
