- Class: Birds
The Cuban flamingo, also called the Caribbean flamingo, is the largest of the 6 species of flamingos.
As with all flamingos, its feeding method is particular: it stirs the mud with its legs to extract the small invertebrates found there. The pink coloring of its plumage is due to the carotene contained in tiny crustaceans such as Artemia salina.
Its beak is provided with lamellae comparable to whale baleen which are used to filter small invertebrates found in the mud: molluscs, insects, annelid worms.
IUCN Status: Least Concern (Appendix III)
