This teal frequents shallow, vegetation-rich freshwater marshes, lakes and ponds. It generally lives in pairs or small groups. It searches for food mainly in the early morning and evening. Its fishing technique enables it to catch mainly insects and crustaceans, but it also consumes seeds and vegetation.

The nest is hidden in the vegetation along the banks. The female lays 6 to 8 eggs in the nest, which is incubated for 24 to 26 days.

IUCN status: Least concern (appendix III)
