- Origin: South America
- Order: Siluriformes
- Family: Loricariidés
It is a peaceful but territorial fish. Its mouth, equipped with a large suction cup, enables it to adhere to the substrate and scrape food from it. It is a “limivore”: it feeds on the algal mat that covers the substrate (roots, rocks), as well as on the animalcules that live there (insect larvae, micro-organisms, etc.). This species has a marked sexual dimorphism: the male has “stag horn” outgrowths on his forehead, while the female has only small tentacles. It is oviparous, with the male taking charge of the frei period.
