The Bleeding heart pigeon is found in the rainforests of the Philippines, spending most of its time on the ground where it searches for food. It owes its name to the blood-red stain that marks its breast like a dagger.

It feeds on seeds, berries, fruit and invertebrates. As with almost all columbids, the female lays two white eggs on a small platform made up of a few twigs. Both parents incubate the eggs for 17 to 18 days. Around two weeks later, the young squabs are able to fly.
