- Class: Birds

Endemic to the island of Bali, the Bali Mayna, also known as the Bali Starling, lives in forests and savannahs planted with acacia trees. This sociable bird lives in sedentary groups except during the breeding season, when it becomes more territorial. It feeds on fruit and insects. The nest is built in a tree trunk or in an old woodpecker nest. The female alone incubates the two or three eggs. At birth, the chicks are naked, their eyes are closed and they are fed by both parents.
A victim of the exotic bird trade, now protected and virtually extinct in the wild, it is the subject of a reintroduction programme. It is one of the rarest and most endangered birds.
